You don’t need more advice.
You need traction.

I’m Mina, founder of Business Path. I help senior professionals and founders leave corporate and build a consulting practice that actually pays. Score your fit below — then let’s talk about what to do with it.

01 · The fit score

Seven signals I use to tell if consulting is really your next move.

Score yourself honestly. If it's not the right time, I'll say so — and point you at what is. About a third of the people who take this land on 'not yet.' That's the point.

01 · Inbound demand

People in my network already ask for my help on this specific problem — unprompted.

3
No one asksAsk weekly
02 · Depth of expertise

I've been the go-to person for one specific problem for 10+ years.

3
GeneralistKnown expert
03 · Buyer clarity

I can name who signs the cheque and which budget line it comes from.

3

04 · Financial runway

I have 6+ months of cushion (severance, savings) to build without panic.

3
None12+ months
05 · Action bias

In the last 30 days I ran a real test — a discovery call, a pitch, a paid pilot. Not research.

06 · Value-pricing courage

I'd rather price on the cost of the client's problem than defend an hourly rate.

07 · Public visibility

I'm willing to flip my LinkedIn to 'Founder / Consultant' inside 30 days.

02 · The positioning clinic

I help ___ solve ___ using ___.

Your practice is a sentence before it's a company. Draft yours live. If it doesn't fit in one paragraph, it isn't sharp enough yet — and that's exactly what we'll fix together on our first call.

Specific enough that you could name three people who fit.

The one that costs them real money if it stays broken.

The specific thing no checklist can replace.

Your one-paragraph concept

I help [a specific buyer] solve [a specific expensive problem] using [my specific edge].

Have a draft? Send it to me on a call and we'll pressure-test it live.

03 · How I coach you to price

Anchor to the cost of the problem, not the hours.

Value pricing sounds abstract until you run the math on your own numbers. The floor, anchor, and ceiling below are the same model my clients use to sign their first contracts with confidence.

$225,000
$20,000

Software, insurance, marketing, admin.

900 hrs

Most solo consultants bill 50–60% of a full-time year (~1,000–1,200 hrs) — the rest goes to business development and admin.

$500,000

Anchor to consequence, not effort. A $2M problem justifies a $160k engagement.

Hourly floor?
$370/hr

Below this you're subsidizing the client. Walk away.

Anchor rate for session one
$415/hr

Where recent launches signed their first contracts.

Engagement ceiling
$225,000

Cap the first three deals here. Learn the value before you chase it.

My clients typically sign their first contract between $350–$500+/hr — and that’s priced on value, not hours. One anchored his intro rate with a written escalator: “$350 through Dec 31, standard $450 at renewal.” The discount became a scheduled raise. That’s the pattern I’ll help you install.

Rule of thumb if you’re stuck on your internal floor: take your last full-time salary and divide by 1,000 — that’s a reasonable MVR starting point (e.g., $360K salary → $360/hr). Then price the client engagement on value from there.

Not sure where you should really price? Let's walk through your numbers together.

04 · How I work

How I work

Five moves. Built for traction, not theatre.

  1. 01

    Real tests, not research

A discovery call, a pitch, a paid pilot — not more reading. The fastest way to know if consulting is for you is to try selling it, not to study it.

  2. 02

Warm intro in, warm reply out

Inside hours, not days. Nearly every client I work with came through a three-way intro, not a cold channel. Speed is the marketing.

  3. 03

    Same-day recaps, commitments in writing

What we agreed to, who owns it, and when it's due — in your inbox before the day ends. This single habit is what turns conversation into momentum.

  4. 04

No completed homework, no next session

This protects your hours from becoming talk therapy — and it filters for the people who will actually build something.

  5. 05

    Give away the mechanics

Incorporation, banking, LinkedIn — free. The part that actually moves the needle is what we do together: packaging your expertise and pricing it with courage.

05 · What my clients ship

Real stories. One honest counterweight.

Names removed, industries kept. The honest no matters most: without it, referrers stop referring — and my practice runs on referrals.

Referred to me on a Monday. Three sessions together: structure, package and price, close and protect. He incorporated, opened the business account, and signed his first contract before session three.

SWOT, offer design, and SOW discipline over four months together. His LinkedIn now reads Founder. We kept the practice deliberately LinkedIn-only for year one — no website until the offer was proven in three signed engagements. A good template for anyone who needs structured support past their runway.

The retiree who registered a companyGenealogy · encore venture
3 sessionspassion → registered co.

Three sessions turned a lifelong passion into a registered company running paid discovery interviews. Retirees exploring encore ventures are a real category I work with, not an edge case. The 'am I too old' question answered itself once she had a live buyer conversation on the calendar.

The honest noMultiple · about a third of the people I meet
~⅓hear 'not yet'

One senior professional tested the idea for a single session and took a job three weeks later. A 25-year HSE veteran sharpened his positioning and accepted a contract role instead. A government-relations transitioner chose corporate. Roughly a third of the people I meet land on 'not yet,' quickly, with no hard feelings. This is why my referrers keep referring.

Industries I work with
Oil & gas majorsPipelinesReciprocating compressorsHSE / safetyRegulatory / GISCorporate trainingGovernment relationsGenealogyContractor marketplacesWellness practiceAI/ML + teachingLand analysis

Roughly two-thirds of my roster comes from energy and pipelines — a real Alberta restructuring wave, not a coincidence. Sector depth compounds: the second HSE director I coach takes half the time of the first.

If you see yourself in any of these stories, that's a good sign we should talk.
